AEO is not SEO. One word explains why.

Unlike search engine results, AI answers are non-deterministic. This means you get different answers to the same question when asked multiple times across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

It's also the reason you can't just buy a keyword to get into organic AI answers. The response gets rebuilt every time someone asks. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) may sound the same, but the similarity stops there.

Different Winners

Ahrefs found that 76% of the pages cited in Google's AI Overviews in July 2025 also ranked in the top ten for the same query. That share fell to 38% by March 2026.

The process of optimizing for search and winning the AI citation has bifurcated, leaving brands in the lurch. As AI usage continues to grow, brands need a new playbook that relies more on consistent visibility across external pages than owned channels, because that's where AI builds its answers, based on consensus with no slotting fees.

Almost half of marketing leaders are flying blind when it comes to being visible in AI answers. A Semrush study found that 45% of them cannot accurately measure it, and only 9% have the tools to track it properly. It's why Qulture built a proprietary AI visibility platform that diagnoses the problems, identifies the solutions, and briefs the relevant teams for action.

Different Signals

In the days before AI was everywhere, backlinks were king. Now they are earned for an algorithm more shoppers are bypassing by asking AI.

A search term used to be a finite object. You could research the volume, price it, and buy your way to the top of the page. Google made $63 billion from search and related ads in the last quarter of 2025, helping brands do exactly that. Searches, however, are not conversations, and 2026 is increasingly showing us why. When we ask AI what to buy, there are myriad ways we can do it. It can be about price, efficacy, a specific problem, or some combination of all three. None of the organic recommendations are for sale, because it's impossible to define the inventory. ChatGPT has sold ad placements since February 2026, and those ads sit alongside the organic answers. Consumers get more useful results, and brands have to work harder to appear in them.

The solution starts with building a battery of 50 or more questions (prompts) for each hero product, all worded the way that real buyers ask. Then these questions need to be asked across all the top AI engines five to ten times, over the course of days and weeks, because a single run tells you little when the answer is rebuilt each time. This is how to determine mention rates you can trust. The goal is to be recommended first, ahead of the competition. Since AI-referred traffic converts at a higher rate, Qulture focuses on hero product optimization to help drive AI visibility ROI.

Different Funnel

Until recently the holy grail of digital marketing was the highly coveted first link on a Google search results page. On pages with AI Overviews, the top result has seen an almost 60% drop in clicks, which has cut traffic to many sites. Traffic coming from AI is a different story, and it's all about conversion.

In an ongoing study, Adobe tracked over a trillion visits to US retail sites and reported that AI-referred traffic converted 42% better than traffic from non-AI sources in March 2026. Twelve months earlier, it converted 38% worse. (The lead widened to 54% by May 2026.) Clearly, the funnel has moved. The brands that pivot first are positioned for a stronger bottom line. The days of scrolling through all the links on the first page of Google search results are coming to an end. In the AI answers, it’s often a handful of reasoned recommendations.

The race to appear on the AI shortlist is the new doorway to discovery. SEO alone won’t get you there. The brands that know where they land on the list are the ones poised to stay on it. The ones that don't are still asking the wrong questions.
